Our VP for International Sports Development Akiko Thomson OLY and Program Manager Kyra Dimaandal met up with PSC Commissioner Bong Coo and 1993 SEA Games gold medalist Marilee Estampador last August 4, 2022 at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). They met to discuss possible programs that will promote safe sport, women in sports, and inclusivity (sports for all) for the country.
Bong Coo was recently appointed as PSC Commissioner and is finding ways to properly utilize and maximize projects to develop sports in the Philippines. To this end, she invited Marilee, who was awarded with the IOC Continental Trophy during the 2016 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Women and Sport Awards, and Akiko, the President of the Philippine Olympians Association, to learn their ideas. Marilee shared her knowledge and experience in safe sport and women in sports, while Akiko shared her passion for inclusive sports. Meanwhile, Kyra, a 3x Collegiate Football Champion, pitched ideas for youth sports and grassroots programs, and emphasized the importance of the year 2023 as it would be a grand time for everyone returning to sport.
The gathering was determined to connect and collaborate more with the others. Everyone’s contributions are essential in the development of Philippine sports. As a young athlete, Kyra was moved by the opportunity to influence and change her country’s sports policies. For her, it was unforgettable – one of the moments that will inspire her more in the coming years. “It was empowering to be in a room with powerful women who can’t seem to stop generating great ideas for the future of Philippine sports”, Kyra said.
